Spring Follow UNITS Everywhere It Goes

I can't help but think, that the value of tennis shoes are under rated. Every spring, things pick up.

As with most businesses, we run around as if our heads were cut off all in the name of growth. And as with every previous spring, we are off to the races with an excellant April, Moving Storage PODS. Although it wasn't a record month for the company, it was indeed a record month of April (obviously a good sign for the coming months). We saw our new outgoing rentals exceeding the empty returns by a delta of +10 for the month.

As with the past 5 months, restoration contractors lead the way to solidify the start of spring, and the need for Portable Storage UNITS in the future. But there are also signs that the residental moving and storage business is on the rise as well. We remain optimistic that the residental side will pick up significantly, just as the restoration did starting back in December. As growth on the moving side of the business is the lead indicator of how well and fast our business grows year by year. And the stonger the residental business, the faster we grow and thrive.

Veterans & Habitat For Heroes

Successfull Mobile Storage: Stored furniture is moved into homes as part of Habitat for Heroes and Foundations for Families project. This development is the first such affordable housing community marketed to military personnel and veterans in the state. Alturnitives to traditional Moving & Storage.

SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO – About 45 Marines and sailors from Camp Pendleton helped move donated furniture on Friday into 17 Habitat for Humanity homes in what a Marine chaplain said was a way of giving back to the community and also to fellow Marines.

The 27-home Calle Rolando development site in San Juan Capistrano, where 11 homes have been purchased by active duty and veterans from the Corps and other military services, is part of Habitat for Heroes and Foundations for Families project. The development is the first such affordable housing community marketed to military personnel and veterans in the state.

The Marines and sailors, majority of them with the Combat Logistics Battalion -1, volunteered to move the furniture into homes on Friday and planned to return again on Saturday to put finishing touches.

All 27 homes in one of Habitat's biggest sites in Orange County have been selected and by the end of September, 11 military and 16 low-income families will have received keys to their homes. Nine homes are already occupied.

Container Donations Provide Much Needed Storage For Charitable Toy and Food Drives
November, 2009-Orange County, Ca- Across the nation, schools and charities have experienced a lag in funding due to the recession. Businesses and families have had to scale down charitable donations and educational funding has been slashed by the government. UNITS Mobile Storage of Orange County has stepped in to help in an unconventional way- through the gift of storage. The mobile storage franchise has donated several of its mobile storage containers to charities and schools throughout Orange County.

The franchise, headquartered in Lake Forest, provides all-in-one storage, and moving solutions through its use of the signature UNITS Mobile Storage containers. The units are breathable, secure storage containers that are easy to use.

The Plaza Vista School, in Irvine, was given a container to store food donations for their food drive. UNITS picked up the container from Plaza Vista and delivered it to Families Forward in Irvine, a program designed to provide food to low-income families and the homeless in southern Orange County. After witnessing the positive impact Families Forward has had on the community, UNITS donated two additional containers for the holiday season.

“Because of the generosity of local businesses and the community, Families Forward needs extra storage space for donated food during the holidays” said Judy Leonard, owner UNITS Mobile Storage of Orange County. “ It’s great to see the community be so giving in such hard times, so I felt the least we could do was insure they had a place to store the donations. We’re honored to be part of such an important effort.”

Saddleback Church, located in Lake Forest, was also given 2 storage UNITS for its Angel Tree Ministries Christmas charity. The UNIT will store toys donated by local residents and congregation members. In turn, the toys will be given to children who have parents in prison. Saddleback has also placed an additional UNIT near the Refinery Ministries building to store a variety of donated food intended for local as well as international destinations to help hungry people the world over.

Instead of traditional donations, UNITS has given a gift that keeps on giving throughout the holidays. The storage containers mean more to philanthropic organizations than a simple monetary donation because they provide a crucial service – a storage facility to gather and distribute food and toys to the citizens in need.

Packing Supplies
Keep the following supplies handy for packing:
· Boxes (standard & wardrobe)
· Bubble wrap
· Newspaper or tissue
· Packing tape
· Scissors
· Marking pen
· Ask us about locks, or any of these additional supplies we offer for rent.

Packing Suggestions
· Label your boxes with list of contents, which room it should go in, and whether or not it is fragile.
· Keep items from each room together. Sorting of contents when you pack will save time and hassle later.
· Reinforce each box with generous amounts of packing tape.
· Cushion the contents generously with bubble wrap, paper or tissue. Remember to wrap breakable items separately.
· Pack heavier items in their own box.
· Do not overfill the boxes. The top should close easily without bulging. Never pack flammable items, or items that could cause damage to the unit. Some examples are paint, thinners, bleach, and gasoline.

Loading the Unit
· Pack old towels, blankets, etc. between fragile contents to minimize shifting inside your UNIT.
· Stack heavier items on the bottom of the container, lighter boxes on top
· Try to evenly distribute the weight within your UNIT, so that it does not become unbalanced.
· Remember not to overload your UNIT. (The specific weight limit of your container is listed in your contract.) Exceeding the weight limit could cause shifting and damage to your contents, and the container.
· Notify UNITS Mobile Storage at least five days in advance to schedule a move.

Portable Storage...Who's on 1st

"Who's On 1st", is an interesting queston when you consider what you really need, and when you need it. So, you are moving, or putting things into storage. We all get so caught up with making decisions, much less the right decision. So much so, we don't even know (or care) "who's on 1st", or "what's on 2nd". The key here is deciding "who" we will entrust our belongings to, and "what" method we will use to accomplish the task. Should we rent a truck, and/or utilize a self storage
unit and do it ourselves, or securing a portable PODS, and allow professionals to provide convenience to our task?

One of the best things that I can say about this, is be careful what direction you choose. I recently had a client call and book an order for a single container to move his belongings almost 100 miles from his original location. The day before we actually dropped the storage container at his home, he called to put a hold (and eventually cancel)on the order. His reasoning was due to the over-riding costs associated with the delivery fees to his final destination (100 miles away). In utilizing a single container, he had already stretched his budget. He then realized he needed a 2nd container to complete the move, which put him over the budgetary edge. In his mind...he had no other option, but to do it himself.

When he informed me that his decision was final, I offered up some advice. I explained to him that recently, other orders such as his had booked, and then cancelled for the very same reason. And to a person, regret reared it's ugly head after the fact each and every time. I offered that I understood what he was doing and why, but suggested that it is not as easy as he would hope, and we would save him time, and convenience (because time is money) in the long run. Armed with this information, he still chose to do it himself. At least he made an informed decision. I will be waiting for his call to tell me I was right!

What is the definition of a value-ad: Value-ad is defined as providing additional value, above and beyond that which is offered by the original sale or transaction, or services offered. So before you make a hasty decision, consider what your time is worth, and what is the most efficient way to accomplish the task of Moving and Storage. Renting a truck does not provide anyone with value-ad, except to save some money upfront. But isn't it really a wash when you consider the additional time and effort, as well as the rush we put on ourselves to return the truck so we are not charged additionally? I say yes it is. If there is a delta, it is much closer than you think, and pales in comparison to the additional stress the alturnitive puts on us. And really, there is no right or wrong decisions, just the decisions you make.

So at the end of the day, I merely offer up my best advice, and send them on their merry way. And more often than not, we take the order...while providing value-ad.

Portable Storage UNITS; Laptops & Technology

Have you ever experienced technology frustration? Well, enjoying and embracing technology is one thing, loathing it is entirely another matter. Moving & storage is done easy, when compared with repeated failure and constant set-up of multiple machines. Hard drive down…I would rather go to the dentist.

Now don’t get me wrong, I like taking days off from work. But not accomplishing a thing while at work, now that really stinks. So in reality, I wasn’t really working, but I was. And multiplying this by at least 3…well, you know!

What is all the fuss about you might ask. My company, UNITS Mobile Storage owned laptop’s HD crashed recently. Upon further inspection, I found that the mobile storage unit I purchased (thought it was new), was actually a refurbished, reconditioned machine. Was this the cause of it's systems failure? Either way, the "Center" where I purchased the portable storage machine graciously admitted to the mishap, and replaced it without much fight. Truly believing that there was no malice by the "Center", I accepted their new machine without any trepidation. I proceeded to recover what data I could from the original HD (was about 60% successful with that), and move on. Not bad considering my HD was toast. Within the next 24 hours (and 3 to 4 hours installing new app’s), I realized that the software I was running was incompatible with the new 64 bit machines. So all I had to do was bring it back to the "Center", and it would be replaced without question…again. I walked out with a new 32 bit machine (3 hours later), and was happy once again. So I spent the next 24 hours loading up software…again, while finishing the process of data recovery. I want to throwout a great big "prop’s" to Norton for their on-line back-up services. Without that service, the remaining 40% would never had been recovered, including the past 6 months of OUTLOOK files. Again, not bad considering. I will not go into the frustration I experienced with our friendly Norton tech support from abroad (India), because I was happy with the end result.

Day 3. While downloading the pst files from Norton, my new machine (Pods #3) froze up at least (3) times, causing additional delay. I spoke with the tech guy from the "Center", and he instructed me to fix this issue by performing a system restore, without telling me I was performing a system restore. This meant the machine was to be restored to a condition from a previous period of time. Uhg….I ended up losing several additional files from that day. I got over that, just shaking my head in disgust.

Which brings me to day #4 of the #3 computer. I finish the downloads of the pst files, as well as the installation of software, and everything seemed to be working just fine. Until I decided to leave 5 small ap's open unattended for an hour or two. Low and behold, the machine freezes up…again, suggested a couple of security warnings…again, and made a few moans and groans of dissatisfaction (seriously, must have know I was writing about it in my blog). This required an immediate reaction on my part (actually, four): 1) I proceeded to curse the machine; 2) curse the "Center" for which I purchased the machine; 3) restart the machine by pressing the on/off button, hopefully without any further lose of my business days data, and/or what hair I have remaining on my head; 4) and finally, call the tech guy at the "Center" for further consultation. He asked me what I wanted him to do, because his only option was to remove and replace the OS. I told him that was ridiculous, given my history. Not completely convinced I was in the clear, I decided to ride this out a couple of more days.

A day in the life...

For those of you who have moved recently, you know that developing an effective moving and/or storage plan is key, while executing it, makes moving done easy. We also know that we would not wish this process on anyone. So how do we clear our mind and maintain a sense of humor…easier said than done you say. I know, I know, we have all done it too many times, and the process really stinks. And everything about moving causes our stress levels to go beyond what we are normally accustomed to, much less capable of enduring. I personally can attest to the anguish and frustration that ensues. Having said that, I always try to maintain an understanding approach, and bring a sense of calm to the process, because our potential clients frequently arrive already stressed by the mere thought of moving, as do we all.

Knowing most who are in the process of moving have already developed that deep hatred for everything to do with this business (too most of us, moving is just like going to the dentist), I try to anticipate their frustrations, and have a readymade solutions to the simplest of problems. I also try to break the ice, as early and often as possible…here is an example of how early in the process it starts:

During a recent call to our office, I am asked if our portable storage PODS where available, and when they can be delivered. I start by informing them that we do not have any PODS available. After a long pause, and then I say: "but we do however have UNITS, from UNITS Mobile Storage of OC", when do you need it. Just in case that is not taken with a little salt, I explain that we always correct people who call UNITS by our competitor’s name. I further explain that our competitors’ have been around forever, and their name is generic for portable storage, just as Xerox is to copy, or Kleenex is to tissue. Even with people who know us, this happens frequently. I go on to explain that we are locally owned and operated, and when you call us, you are speaking to the business owners who resides and works in the area that is being serviced (not a call center out of state). This means that we can put you on our calendar immediately, and deliver your UNIT when you need it. Not just down the road when it is convenient for us to bring it to you.
